CBC announces first online degree program, Mabee Challenge Grant CBC announces first online degree program, Mabee Challenge Grant(0)

A new, start-to-finish accredited online degree program and a challenge grant for future construction prompted a press conference Monday at Central Baptist College. Two degrees will now be available through the college’s “enrollment to degree” online program, which uses a student’s rented or owned remote proctor.

Dr. Gary McAllister, vice president of academic affairs, presented the virtual proctor prototype like those to be used in the program to attendees at the Mabee Student Services building Monday. He also explained its role as offering convenience to the student and contribution to accreditation success.

“An online student may use a librarian as a proctor, but that librarian does not know the actual identity of that student, or that librarian could be the student’s aunt,” McAllister said. “There’s no guarantee with the situation.”

The Securexam Remote Proctor is a device roughly the size of an office telephone that online students may rent or buy, which has the ability to authenticate the student’s identity, to record a testing room with a rotating camera, and to control browser settings to reduce a student’s ability to cheat.

“The primary purpose of offering distance-delivered courses and programs at Central Baptist College is to provide access to students who cannot attend face-to-face classes on campus,” McAllister said. “Some live too far from campus, and others have scheduling conflicts that prevent them from taking the classes they need. Distance-delivered courses can resolve these issues.”The slogan for the new degree program is “college at your convenience.”

The proctors will be available for purchase for the student at around $200, and the college is still working to develop a possible rental solution.

The school has offered online courses with its degree programs, though never has a CBC student been able to complete their degree using online courses alone.

President Terry Kimbrow said the school’s online studies program was accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

He added the program’s approval by the group was a “major accomplishment” for the school, which will have “a profound impact upon the institution.

McAllister said Monday he believed the offering of a fully online degree at CBC was the only one in the state by a private, non-profit, accredited regional college.

“You can start and complete a degree at CBC from anywhere in the world,” he said.

UOG to launch Online Master in Education Degree Program UOG to launch Online Master in Education Degree Program(0)

Guam – The University of Guam received approval on August 16 from the Senior Commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges to offer its first full degree program online.

“The Master of Education with a Specialization in Reading Program addresses a critical need to strengthen language and literacy teaching in public schools in Guam and throughout the region,” said UOG Senior Vice President Helen Whippy.

Catherine Stoicovy, PhD, a faculty member in the School of Education designed the curriculum and is the driving force behind the program and its success in passing through the WASC approval process. “This program offers the same rigor and academic quality as a face-to-face academic program, yet offers the convenience of online learning that fits the schedules of busy professionals in the field of education who hold fulltime jobs.”

While UOG offers several individual courses online, including a new online Chemistry course this fall, this is the first full online degree program to be offered to the public. “We will begin to recruit students for the program this fall with implementation in Spring 2012,” said Whippy. Interested individuals can view program courses at www.uog.edu.

“This is fantastic news for the University, for students on Guam, and throughout the region,” said UOG President Robert A. Underwood. “When we launch the program in January of 2012 it will be an auspicious beginning to our 60th anniversary celebration which begins in 2012 and underscores the progress we have made as an institution over the last six decades.”

In her speech to faculty Tuesday during Fall Convocation, Whippy also set the goal of putting 50% of general education courses online by the end of the academic year.

Preparing For Graduate School Courses From Online Degree Programs–Financial Aid Options And Benefits For Current Workers Preparing For Graduate School Courses From Online Degree Programs–Financial Aid Options And Benefits For Current Workers(0)

Some students who may have graduated college in the recent months could be entering into the workforce but be in a position where they also want to pursue a graduate degree, but there are also many men and women who are currently in the workforce or who may be unemployed and are also looking at furthering their education as a way to help them with their career. In some cases, many of these graduates or workers are looking at online universities as a way to help them pursue a graduate degree, but financial assistance and the benefits that may come from using an online degree program are still areas of uncertainty for many workers.

Essentially, online graduate degree programs that will help workers pay for their costs through financial aid packages may not be something that workers have currently explored, but for young men and women who may also have graduated college with debt related to student loans, if a graduate degree is to be pursued it may require that financial assistance be offered so that more debt is not gained. However, questions still surround the online university world as to whether financial assistance is available or if there are benefits for men and women who are currently in the workforce but want to pursue a graduate degree.

While there are options for financial assistance to help graduate students through an online degree program, there may also be benefits that some workers may see as well. One of the main reasons that current employees will use online degree programs is that it will better fit into their schedule and, as a result, they will be able to continue working and attending classes without having to take courses on a traditional college campus. However, not all men and women may benefit or be able to use an online degree program to pursue a specific graduate degree, but those who are in a position to benefit from accredited online university courses for distance education classes made available directly from major universities do also stand to take and manage financial assistance as well.

Popular options like Pell grants can be helpful for students who are pursuing an online degree but recent changes in graduate school program funding, as a result of the debt reduction talks and legislation that were going on weeks ago, may make graduate school assistance from federal sources more difficult to come by in the future. Yet, some online universities, and traditional universities that offer online degree programs, can be of help in this area as students may be able to get an institutional financial assistance award through either a scholarship or grant. Also, workers may want to check with their employer to see if they will help them meet certain costs when they pursue a graduate degree as there are still some businesses that will either meet a percentage of or the entirety of a student’s financial aid costs.

Yet, some consumers may further benefit by focusing on an online graduate degree, as long as it’s accredited, in that they may not only have financial aid options, convenience when it comes to completing coursework, but some online university degree programs may be more affordable than a traditional graduate degree program of a particular university. However, potential students need to remember that if they want to get financial aid for a graduate school online degree program they will have to do a great deal of research, talk with financial aid professionals at their university, and make sure that they consult resources that may not only offer generalized scholarships and grants but may help men and women in their specific field of study pursue a graduate degree
